Saturday’s soccer game at Davis Park on August 26, was truly memorable for the Lions, dominating the Ravens 5-1. The team performed astoundingly both halves, taking control of the field throughout the game. Both unstoppable offense and impenetrable defense were major factors in this monumental victory.
Liberty dominated the possession for the first five minutes of the game. Irvington Prep gained a foothold shortly after. For the next ten minutes, the game was very close. Both teams held the ball for an even amount of time. LCS Coach DJ Callahan believed that the game’s momentum shifted in their favor around ten minutes in. Neither team had scored until the 15 minute mark. LCS’ left striker, Brayden Etherington, made the first goal off of a penalty kick. After the Lions had controlled the game in the first, the halftime score read 3-0. The second half was even better for Liberty Christian. The Lions only allowed one goal. The Ravens made the shot with only 4:42 left on the clock in the second.
In a postgame interview with Brayden Etherington, who scored two goals, we asked him how he thought his team played. He responded, “I think my team played amazing! I know I didn’t play my very best. I probably could have added on a couple more (goals), but I’m glad we still got the victory five to one.” Offense was a big factor in the win, but defense also was important. Goalie Joshua Tufts had an impressive six saves throughout the game. Irvington also performed well defensively with five saves.
We asked right forward, Negesse Kishpaugh how he thought his team could improve. He replied “We need to work on our defense and also our offense; and switching the field because there is a lot of open area on the other side”. With a record of 4-0, the Lions are looking to have an amazing season ahead of them.
